Ruby was midway up the drilling tower, with Goon right behind.

He shouted, “You got a signal yet?”

She looked down at the satellite phone hanging from her shoulder. “Nothing. This place is like a void.” Glancing down, she added, “Hey, Tigger ain’t looking so good.”

Goon saw that she was right. Tigger was climbing using one arm and his progress was painfully slow.

Goon shouted, “Look out below!” then shifted his legs outside the ladder rungs and slid down, navy style. Tightening his grip brought him to a hard stop a few feet above Tigger. The Honduran was deathly pale and drenched in sweat.

Tigger looked up and, gritting his teeth, said, “My arm’s fucked.”

Goon said, “Climb up behind me and wrap your legs around my waist.

“I can make it.”

“Quit bitchin’ and do it.”

Tigger climbed up and over Goon into a piggyback position and said, “I’m on, now giddyap.”

Goon started climbing and said, “Smart ass. You’re lucky I’m strong as a horse.”

“More like a burro.”

Goon laughed and kept climbing. “What happened to Flynn?”

“That culo left me and took off.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know, I was kinda busy.”

Goon climbed a few more rungs and asked, “Is that your machete poking me or are you just glad to see me?”

“You ain’t my type.” Tigger heard something in the distance, like a swarm of angry bees, growing louder. “What the—”

A dark shape whipped past, almost knocking Goon off the ladder. Twenty feet to his right, a black gyrocopter was moving into a hover; a few seconds later, it started to ascend.

“It’s a drone.” Goon pushed himself even harder, taking the rungs two at a time. “We need to get up top and warn Ruby.”
